It’s that time of the year again. Back-to-school advertisements are everywhere, your local department store has become a mosh-pit of crazed mothers searching for the best bargain, the kids in the apartment down below you are getting louder as they are realising that they only have two weeks before going back to school. Yet you’re glad about it because it means no more sleepless nights anymore (and it’s not because of the house-music-loving neighbour of yours deciding to end his love of mind-numbing music) and no more worrying about “accidentally” kicking a screaming toddler making your way around town.
Just when you thought the days of schooling were over for good, here they are presenting themselves, every year in late January. Yet this year, it’s not like before, because it seems we will be getting an education – and one that doesn’t involve numbers and letters in the same sentence.
Back-to-school looks are in – and I don’t mean the ghastly shade of garbage-green sloppy joes or polo shirts.
Pleated preppy frocks are back in style. When paired with a pastel button up shirt and a light summer cardigan or jumper, they are the best way to wear them.
The weather might be warm, but try pairing the look with socks and sandals (no, not the ones your father wears), but instead look to it-girl Pixie Geldof for inspiration as she pairs her white ankle socks with ankle boots.
Similarly, other British it-girl, Alexa Chung, proves preppy is in, as she pairs whimsical skirts from the likes of Alice + Olivia with a lightweight blouse and mary-jane heels.
Pretty and feminine, the look is the perfect, light summer look to wear out for a walk or picnic with friends.
If only school looked this cool a few years ago.
