New York City, considered a fashion hub, and one of the top cities to visit, is a dream place to live for many. A lot of Aussies work and live there, which really comes to no surprise. Originally from Canada, DJ Brendan Fallis calls NYC home and we were lucky enough to briefly chat about his fave hangs and what we should be listening to right now.
Hey Brendan! How old are you and how would you describe what you do/occupation to the uninitiated?
I'm 33 and I'm a DJ and Producer. I manage Theophilus London and I am a partner in a coconut water brand called Waiola.
Researching a lot of DJs and their backstories, most say they fell into DJing, saw an opportunity and took it – was that the same case for you?
Yes, I totally fell into it. I had moved to New York and my salary wasn't so large so I ended up hanging with a good friend while he managed a restaurant so I could eat for free. They had a DJ set up there so I brought my computer in and we would teach ourselves. That's how it all began.
You’re a fashionable guy; you were featured as one of 50 stylish New Yorkers by StyleCaster and ‘One to Watch’ by Mr.Porter. Although you confessed you’re not the ‘fashiony’ type, what would be one style tip to offer to the modern man?
Keep it simple. I prefer sticking to the classics. But most importantly, just wear what you wear with confidence.
Originally from Canada, but residing in NYC – where are some of your fave places to hang, eat or sight-see?
I love Jacks Wife Freda for lunch, Cafe Select for a casual evening drink, and Soho House rooftop is a staple. I've really been loving Uncle Boons as of late for dinner. Sight-see…. Well, at any given time you can see something interesting in New York, but I love to ride up the West Side Highway to the Cloisters. That's an amazing part of the city.
Some Aussies/New Zealanders like Gotye, Lorde, Kimbra, Flume, Anna Lunoe are making massive waves in the US right now. Any of them on your radar?
Loving Lorde a lot, and have been for a minute. Gotye obviously was in everyones ear for a better part of the last year. Anna played an event I DJ'd at Coachella and I love her work as well. Flume and Kimbra are also amazing. The Aussie scene is so strong right now. I'm also digging Chet Faker and have been a huge fan of Flight Facilities for awhile now.
Finally, any artists/musicians your listening to right now that should be on our radar?
I'm excited for Theophilus London's new album to hit. You should definitely have that on your list to check out when it drops. Besides that ASTR and FKA Twigs are my newest addictions. Both will be household names very soon.
Thanks to Gabe Walker for making this happen.
